Man Nearly Dies From Sepsis After Eating Pub Roast Chicken Dinner
The family has raised more than £37,000 for the St Helier ICU after doctors saved him from cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure.
- In Kingswood, Surrey, Udhyam Amin, 64, was rushed to Helier Hospital shortly after enjoying a roast chicken dinner at his local pub. The meal triggered sepsis and multi-organ failure, leaving him critically ill.
- Campylobacter bacteria, which caused his food poisoning, triggered rapid deterioration including cardiac arrest. Doctors placed Amin on a ventilator in the ICU, and his family were warned he had only hours to live.
- Amin's daughter, Parisha Bains, recalled the family's ordeal, saying, "It felt like our world had fallen apart." Dedicated staff at Helier Hospital worked through the night to save his life despite the dire prognosis.
- After two weeks in an induced coma, Amin relearned how to walk and speak, rebuilding strength lost to sepsis. He has since returned home and is working seven days a week.
- To thank the medical team, the family launched a fundraiser for Epsom and Helier Hospitals Charity, raising more than $49,655. The funds support other critically ill patients and families in the ICU.
