HD Hyundai and SIMA Unveil HDS-MGP Submarine Vision for Peruvian Navy
The joint design is tailored for Latin American waters and could help SIMA build and maintain submarines independently, officials said.
- On Tuesday, July 14, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and SIMA Shipyard presented the HDS-MGP submarine design at the Peruvian Navy Headquarters, marking successful completion of the basic design phase.
- Following a 2024 contract for four surface vessels, the organizations formalized their submarine cooperation through a joint development agreement in late 2025 to establish a self-sustaining industrial ecosystem in Peru.
- The HDS-MGP is a 65-meter, 1,500-tonne conventional submarine customized for Pacific coast conditions, requiring precise welding and rigorous quality control to withstand immense external pressure during deep-sea operations.
- With the basic design complete, the project advances toward detailed engineering and infrastructure upgrades as HHI prepares to assist SIMA in constructing, maintaining, and supporting the submarines independently.
- Beyond replacing Peru's aging fleet, the partners plan to introduce the HDS-MGP to other markets across Latin America, positioning the facility as a regional hub for submarine maintenance and future construction.
