HBO confirms major news about future of ‘Game of Thrones’ shows

HBO will air new seasons of prequels A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon annually through 2028 with staggered releases for fans.

  • On Thursday, HBO announced at a New York press presentation that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was renewed for a second season before its Jan. 18, 2026 debut, while House of the Dragon received a fourth-season pickup.
  • To stagger releases, HBO will alternate Game of Thrones prequels through 2028 and shift premieres to avoid the HBO–Sky deal while enabling HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.
  • HBO confirmed production specifics including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms producing six half-hour episodes per season as a three-season Dunk and Egg adaptation, starring Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell, with George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker co-creating and Parker showrunning.
  • Both shows will stream on HBO Max and air on HBO, with House of the Dragon Season 3 arriving in summer 2026, Season 4 in 2028, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 slated for 2027.
  • Greenlit in April 2023, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut nearly three years later, set roughly 100 years before Game of Thrones and 72 years after House of the Dragon, which draws on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood.
