Hawks arrest DG, senior national health department officials
Three senior Department of Health officials, including the director-general, face charges after over R1 million was allegedly paid improperly, violating the Public Finance Management Act.
- The Hawks arrested three senior officials from the National Department of Health, including Director-General Sandile Buthelezi, on Monday morning, in a fraud investigation.
- An in-depth investigation since April 2024 alleges that in 2023 over R1 million was unduly awarded in contravention of the Public Finance Management Act, the National Prosecuting Authority says the case involves irregular appointments paid via the Global Fund.
- Between 30 August and 28 September 2023, prosecutors say Ithani Amen Ltd and N Mbileni J Tohlang-Nkopane Inc were paid from Global Fund allocations meant for training and Covid-19 psychosocial support.
- The three appeared in Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court and were released on R10,000 bail each, facing two counts of fraud and theft; Buthelezi faces an additional PFMA charge and all must surrender passports and avoid work premises.
- Authorities added that one suspect and her company are yet to be arrested, with Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi still in the dark, according to GCIS.
