Hawaii displays historic photos of Martin Luther King Jr. wearing flower lei during Selma march
Most of the exhibit’s photos have never been seen before and show King wearing lei brought by a four-member Hawaii delegation to Selma.
On Tuesday, photographs of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wearing flower lei from Hawaii residents went on public display at the state Capitol in Honolulu.
In 1965, a delegation of four people traveled to Alabama to support the Civil Rights movement, bringing 48 flower lei to share the aloha spirit.
King was photographed wearing lei after the Bloody Sunday attack on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, according to images donated by the widow of photographer Matt Herron.
Acting Gov. Keith Regan presided over the unveiling, noting the exhibit marks the 250th anniversary of the United States and reminds residents the Aloha State participated in history.
The exhibit runs through July 7, serving as a reflection on the Civil Rights movement as the nation faces new challenges regarding the Voting Rights Act.
