Kit Harington Says 'Harry Potter' Helped Him with Sobriety Struggles
The actor said Stephen Fry’s audiobooks became a nightly coping tool after he quit drinking and called the series a special part of his recovery.
- On Monday, actor Kit Harington revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Harry Potter audiobooks aided his sobriety while confirming he will portray Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO Harry Potter Season 2.
- The former Game of Thrones star explained that quitting alcohol made his 'incredibly busy' brain harder to manage at night, prompting him to seek comfort in the audiobooks.
- Harington previously voiced Lockhart in Audible's The Full-Cast Audio Editions, released in late 2025; he replaces Nicholas Hoult, who departed the project earlier this year over scheduling conflicts.
- When approached for the role, Harington said, 'Yes, please!' expressing enthusiasm for the show's potential to 'delve into it further than the films did,' and he is set to appear as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Season 2.
- Titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the HBO Harry Potter series premieres Dec. 25, while the character was famously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
