Harry Higgs, 'the Big Rig,' trucks into the US Open weekend with the right attitude and right pants
Higgs shot a 2-under 68 in the second round and enters the weekend at 1 under after nearly quitting golf earlier in the week.
Harry Higgs, who entered the U.S. Open field as an alternate on Monday, heads into the weekend at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club after making the cut. Higgs secured his spot when Bud Cauley won the Canadian Open last weekend.
Shortly before joining the 156-player field, Higgs nearly quit the sport entirely, burned out by mental beatings. Upon arriving in New York, the 235-pound golfer mistakenly wore shorts to Shinnecock Hills instead of pants, requiring a frantic wardrobe change.
Higgs shot a 2-under 68 in Friday's second round, boosted by a 75-foot putt for birdie after missing the 11th green. This performance marked significant improvement for the golfer who often struggled with mental lapses after similar errors.
Acknowledging his previous tendency to spiral, Higgs said he had only a "3 out of 10 freakout" following a poor tee shot. He credited this improved mental approach for keeping him in contention in his first PGA Tour cut of the year.
Entering the weekend at 1 under, Higgs sits six shots behind leader Wyndham Clark. He aims to recreate his recent success over the final two days, stating, "I'm just going to try my damnedest," to remain a factor.
