Harris County Jury Awards $61.5 Million to Survivors of Watson Grinding Explosion, Holds 3M Accountable

- On Monday, a Harris County jury awarded $61.5 million to 24 survivors of the Watson Grinding explosion, finding 3M 30% responsible for failing to properly inspect the gas detection system at the West Houston facility.
- The January 24, 2020, disaster began after leaking propylene gas accumulated inside the Watson Grinding facility and ignited, killing three people and destroying or damaging more than 450 surrounding homes and businesses.
- Lead trial counsel Adam Lewis of Arnold & Itkin stated the jury found that 3M "failed to properly inspect and correct a critical gas detection system, with devastating consequences for the 24 survivors."
- Attorney Ryan Loya noted the verdict "sends a clear message to 3M that Harris County isn't going to tolerate" vendors neglecting safety, though 3M has previously planned to appeal similar adverse decisions.
- Nearly 2,000 additional Harris County citizens are still awaiting trial regarding the disaster, and another group of cases is scheduled to proceed in October as survivors continue seeking accountability.
