HarperCollins takes over India publication of Sonia Gandhi’s memoir after Penguin exit
HarperCollins India said the memoir remains on track for a 100,000-copy global release after Penguin Random House India withdrew over editorial disputes.
- On Friday, HarperCollins India announced it will publish Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, on November 10, 2026, after the book's previous publisher withdrew.
- Penguin Random House India previously withdrew from the project after negotiations reached an impasse over what the publisher called a "particular issue" regarding "editorial changes and deletions" in the manuscript.
- Critics alleged the publisher faced demands to remove passages concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh , and Chinese territorial occupation, though PRHI denies external pressure.
- PRHI spokesperson Pallavi Narayan told PTI earlier this week the firm remained "willing and keen" to publish, describing editorial review as ensuring content remains "legally defensible."
- The memoir's global release remains scheduled for November 10 through Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House, as the Indian edition shifts to HarperCollins.
