Hantavirus Risk Low in Ontario, Province’s Chief Medical Officer Says
Officials say the couple has no symptoms and will be monitored for 45 days after exposure on the ship and a flight.
- On Friday, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Kieran Moore, confirmed two Ontario residents are isolating at home after disembarking late last month from a cruise ship facing a deadly hantavirus outbreak.
- The rodent-borne Andes virus, the only hantavirus known to be capable of limited human-to-human transmission, has caused eight reported cases and three deaths aboard the cruise ship.
- Moore is monitoring the couple for 45 days, the virus's longest potential incubation period, following their exposure on the ship and a subsequent flight from St. Helena to Johannesburg involving a sick passenger.
- While acknowledging that "contact tracing" can be anxiety-provoking, Moore assured Ontarians that authorities have a plan, emphasizing this is not a repeat of the COVID-19 pandemic.
