Worldwide race to trace passengers from hantavirus-hit cruise ship
WHO says contact tracing is underway as health officials monitor exposed passengers across 13 countries and report three deaths linked to the outbreak.
- The hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius has resulted in eight illnesses and three deaths among passengers and crew, with the virus identified as the Andes strain by the WHO.
- The Andes strain of hantavirus, which is carried by rodents, can rarely be transmitted from human to human, especially among close contacts such as those sharing cabins, likely explaining some onboard infections.
- Symptoms of hantavirus infection include fever, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, and severe respiratory issues appearing 1 to 8 weeks after exposure, and treatment is supportive as there is no specific vaccine or antiviral available.
- Health authorities are investigating the outbreak's transmission sources, including possible exposure from Argentina or islands visited, and are conducting protective measures, epidemiological investigation, and medical evacuations to the Netherlands and Johannesburg.

The outbreak of hantavirus detected on the MV Hondius cruiser, with several passengers affected by the Andean variant of the virus and several deaths, has inevitably awakened the global fear left by the COVID-19 pandemic. Every new news about zoonotic diseases, that is, those capable of jumping between animals and humans, triggers an understandable emotional alarm, especially when concepts such as “transmission between people”, “emerging virus” …
The hantavirus has been confirmed in the 65-year-old German woman who died aboard the Dutch cruise ship Hondius. This brings the number of confirmed hantavirus infections to six, the World Health Organization (WHO) told the ANP. In addition, there are two suspected infections. All confirmed cases involve the Andean variant, which can be transmitted from person to person. Earlier, a Dutch couple who were on board the ship died. The hantavirus was…
Hantavirus Isn’t Especially Dangerous… Except That It’s in the Hands of the Spanish Government – The American Spectator | USA News and Politics
I’d be inclined to laugh off the hantavirus issue if it weren’t for the fact that, by one of those cruel twists of fate, it has landed in the hands of the most incompetent and idiotic government in the entire Western world: the government of Spain. Outside my country, people have no idea of the destructive capacity of President Pedro Sánchez. Grass never grows where he walks. If he has the choice between 50 brilliant ideas and one bad, dangerous…
