Handheld Breathalyzer Enables Precise Monitoring of Fat Metabolism
The handheld Nutrion device uses a filter and smartphone app to track fat metabolism, with 312 breath readings matching lab results in a validation study.
ETH Zurich researchers have developed a handheld breathalyzer called Nutrion that measures fat-burning acetone levels with accuracy comparable to laboratory mass spectrometers.
Previous consumer breath-testing devices struggled with humidity and environmental interference, so researchers developed a filter to block interfering molecules and a smartphone app guiding precise exhalation timing.
Testing on 312 breath samples from 12 healthy adults aged 20 to 37 showed the device's readings matched high-end mass spectrometer results closely across exercise, ketogenic, and fasting interventions.
Andreas Güntner, Professor of Molecular Sensing at ETH Zurich's Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, explained that independent monitoring tools could help personalize metabolic management for conditions like epilepsy or GLP-1 therapies.
Although the device is now commercialized by Alivion AG, researchers emphasize that broader testing across diverse groups is required before clinical use, while the team seeks industry partners to scale production.
