Original Xbox Version of Halo: Combat Evolved Made Available to Play in a Browser With Splitscreen Co-Op and Up Multiplayer for Up to 128 Players
Mitchell Hynes’ fan-made version runs the full campaign in a browser and adds online multiplayer for up to 128 players.
- On Tuesday, AI developer Mitchell Hynes released Halo: Combat Evolved directly in web browsers, allowing the original Xbox game to run without a console or traditional PC installation.
- Following the recent decompilation of the 2001 shooter, Hynes clarified this release is not Borderlands developer Gearbox's official and divisive 2003 PC port of Halo: Combat Evolved.
- Running well in Google Chrome, the game saw nearly 20,000 games within five hours of release, hitting an average of 94 frames per second with multiplayer support for up to 128 players.
- Hynes insisted a temporary ban was due to an automatic flag from Cloudflare, rather than Microsoft, and the site was soon restored after some users thought the "Website was flagged as" "Suspected Phishing."
- Legal risks persist as publishers like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Square Enix could challenge such projects, distinguishing decompilation efforts from AI-generated clones that companies like Bethesda have pulled offline via cease and desist orders.
