Hall of Famer Rick Adelman, who won more than 1,000 games and took 2 teams to NBA Finals, dies at 79
The Hall of Fame coach won 1,042 games and led the Portland Trail Blazers to two NBA Finals appearances.
Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Adelman died at 79, the National Basketball Coaches Association announced on Monday. Adelman won 1,042 games over a nearly 30-year career, ranking 10th in league history.
Best known for leading the Portland Trail Blazers to two NBA Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992, Adelman also coached the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Before his coaching success, Adelman played in the NBA for eight years. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 and received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
Adelman is survived by his wife, Mary Kay, to whom he was married for 56 years, and twelve grandchildren. His son, David Adelman, currently serves as head coach of the Denver Nuggets.
The Sacramento Kings said in a statement Monday that Adelman's "leadership, character, and vision" helped define an era of basketball. Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle previously praised Adelman for finding subtle ways to reinvent the game.
Former coach Rick Adelman, who twice took the Portland Blazers team to the NBA final without ever winning it, died at the age of 79, announced Monday, the Association of North American Coaches.
