Halifax man faces new charge after allegedly threatening to bomb U.S. consulate
A federal prosecutor said Ali Assakereh, 54, faces a charge tied to threatening an internationally protected person after the consulate bomb threat.
On Aug. 19, 2026, a federal prosecutor confirmed that 54-year-old Ali Assakereh of Halifax faces a new charge of threatening to endanger the life of an internationally protected person related to the Consulate bomb threat.
Police evacuated the intersection of Barrington Street and Duke Street in downtown Halifax on Aug. 10, 2026, after responding to a bomb threat against the Consulate that shut down a large section of the city.
Investigators allegedly discovered the suspect's vehicle in a nearby parkade containing a propane tank and containers of flammable liquids; police had charged Assakereh with uttering threats and public mischief last week.
Assakereh remains in custody and is scheduled for a court appearance today to address the escalating charges stemming from the Consulate incident earlier this month.
The RCMP stated the Consulate constitutes the official premises of an internationally protected person under the Criminal Code, justifying the severity of the federal charges against the Halifax man.
