L&T Delivers First LCA Mk1A Wing Set to HAL, Boosting Indigenous Fighter Production - The Statesman

INDIA, JUL 16 – The new contract will boost indigenous production capacity and help the Indian Air Force reach its sanctioned squadron strength of 42 from 31, supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat goals.

  • On July 17, 2025, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited took delivery of the initial batch of wing assemblies for the LCA Tejas Mk-1A, which were manufactured by Larsen & Toubro in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
  • This handover follows the 2021 defence ministry deal worth Rs 48,000 crore for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets and ongoing efforts to increase production capacity with private sector partners.
  • HAL has established an additional aircraft structural assembly facility involving partners such as L&T, Lakshmi Machine Works, and Tata Advanced Systems to enhance production capacity for the LCA Tejas program.
  • L&T will initially provide four wing sets each year, aiming to triple this output to 12 sets annually by implementing advanced automation techniques, while HAL's CMD Dr. DK Sunil described the occasion as a reflection of their sustained partnership.
  • Officials expressed confidence this partnership will enhance India’s aerospace self-reliance, meet production targets, and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for fighter jets.
