Haiti Urges UN to Renew Anti-Gang Force Mandate Ahead of Planned Election

- Established last year to replace the failed Multinational Security Support mission, the GSF has struggled to scale operations; Justin Gorkowski, who co-leads a U.S. oversight team, noted only about 20% of the force is currently deployed.
- Amid widespread gang violence, Forbin stated, "We need technical, financial, logistical and safety support that is up to the challenge," as the government plans to hold elections on December 13.
- Supporting these efforts, OAS Secretary-General Albert Ramdin pledged an Electoral Observation Mission to help ensure a credible vote, though about 1 million national identity cards must be produced and distributed before voting can proceed.
