Hack During NJ Election Zoom Was ‘Vile and Shocking’: Officials
NEW JERSEY, JUL 24 – The Election Law Enforcement Commission plans a full investigation after a hacker’s racist and pornographic interruption halted debate sponsorship talks, officials said.
- On Thursday morning, a state-run virtual meeting to select debate hosts was halted by a hacker, who unleashed racist comments and pornographic videos.
- With the meeting under way at 10 a.m., ELEC sought presentations from nine media sponsors vying for three debate slots, including two for Ciattarelli vs Sherrill and one for lieutenant governor hopefuls.
- About 10 minutes into the meeting, alarms, ringtones and explosions disrupted WABC and WPVI presenters before pornographic images including a swastika flashed on screens.
- In response, ELEC offered apologies and sought a probe, while the commission called on Gov. Phil Murphy and Attorney General Matthew Platkin to investigate.
- The commission plans two gubernatorial and one lieutenant governor debate later this year, with rescheduling for next Tuesday and safeguards in place, said Thomas Prol.
