H1N1 Outbreak: Bengaluru School Closed After 500 Students, 21 Staff Fall Ill
At least two H1N1 cases were confirmed, and one staff member was treated at Bangalore Baptist Hospital as the school stayed closed for two days.
Clarence High School in Bengaluru remains closed today, August 18, 2026, after more than 500 students fell ill with fever, cold, cough, and body ache; at least two cases were confirmed as H1N1.
Administrator Commodore Prem Reuben attributed the outbreak to unhygienic conditions created by street vendors near the Richards Town campus, urging civic authorities to intervene immediately.
Over 20% of the 2,500-strong student body is absent due to illness, with 21 staff members also affected. One staff member is currently undergoing treatment at Bangalore Baptist Hospital.
City Corporation Health Officer Siddapaji Gowda denied the school's allegations, stating the illness stems from weather-related common cold rather than food vendors; the disease spread within the school.
As a precautionary measure, the school closed Montessori classes and shifted students from classes 6 to 10 to online learning. Gowda announced plans to remove street vendors within 50 metres of the school.
