Gunmen kill 2 police officers assigned to protect polio workers in Pakistan
The attacks came as Pakistan launched a week-long polio campaign targeting more than 19 million children, officials said.
On Monday, gunmen in two separate attacks killed two police officers assigned to protect polio vaccination teams in Bajaur, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, police officer Zafar Khan said.
Militants frequently target health workers and police escorts, falsely claiming vaccination drives are part of a 'Western conspiracy' to sterilize children.
Pakistan launched a new campaign to vaccinate 19 million children against polio, though more than 200 workers and police officers have been killed in such operations since the 1990s.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned Monday's attacks in a formal statement, offering condolences to the families of the killed officers.
While no group claimed responsibility, suspicion falls on the Pakistani Taliban, as Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only countries where polio has not been eradicated, according to the World Health Organization.
