Gunmen kill 13 in Nigeria's Plateau state attack

At least 14 people were confirmed dead after gunmen on motorcycles attacked Jos North communities, prompting a 48-hour curfew and deployment of security forces, police said.

  • On Sunday night, gunmen on motorcycles attacked the Anguwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, killing 14 people according to the Plateau State Police Command. The victims included two women.
  • Plateau State, situated in Nigeria's Middle Belt, experiences recurring violence between Fulani herders and Christian farmers, though mass casualty attacks in Jos have been rare in recent years. Criminal gangs also operate in the region.
  • Berom Youth Moulders Association President Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri disputed the toll, claiming no fewer than 27 people died. Eyewitnesses reported the assailants wore uniforms resembling those of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
  • Following the attack, state authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew to prevent further violence. A mob subsequently formed and "attacked people that were either passing or doing business and they killed them," resulting in 10 additional deaths.
  • Plateau State Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah is leading a joint security operation to apprehend the perpetrators. Soldiers from Operation Enduring Peace have been deployed to the community to restore order and prevent further escalation.
