Gunman who killed 4 at Manhattan office building was targeting NFL headquarters, mayor says
MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY, JUL 29 – Shane Tamura targeted NFL headquarters but took the wrong elevator, killing four including an NYPD officer and a Blackstone executive before dying by suicide, police said.
- A gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan tower on Monday evening, killing four including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, and then died by suicide.
- Police said Tamura, 27, did have "a documented mental health history" and left a note referencing "CTE."
- Investigators said the shooter carried an M4 rifle into the building, shot a security guard and a woman taking cover behind a pillar, and exited a double-parked BMW.
- Following the shooting, the NYPD confirmed no active threat remains, and one NFL employee was seriously injured and remains in stable condition at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
- The investigation continues into Tamura’s mental health background, with investigators probing the connection between his actions and alleged 'CTE' claims, as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell extended support to the injured employee’s family.
