Gunman started Idaho blaze and then fatally shot 2 firefighters in ambush attack, officials say
COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO, JUN 29 – Two firefighters died and a third was critically injured after a gunman set a wildfire to ambush responders, prompting a multi-agency manhunt and standoff, officials said.
- Two firefighters were fatally shot and a third seriously injured during an ambush while responding to a wildfire on June 29, 2025 near Canfield Mountain, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
- The attack followed a deliberately set brush fire intended to lure firefighters into sniper fire from an individual later found dead with a weapon nearby.
- Authorities used a cell signal to track down and contain the suspected shooter, deploying nearly 300 enforcement personnel including snipers via helicopter.
- Sheriff Bob Norris expressed that the firefighters were overwhelmed in the situation, confirming that the gunman acted alone while the wildfire continued to spread across 15 to 20 acres.
