Gujarat 2008 Blasts: HC Upholds Death Sentence for 38 Convicts; Life Term for 11
On Tuesday, the Gujarat High Court upheld death sentences for 38 convicts and life imprisonment terms for 11 others in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case. Justices A Y Kogje and Samir Dave rejected all appeals against the verdict.
Members of the Indian Mujahideen carried out the 2008 bombings, which targeted 20 locations across Ahmedabad. The attack remains one of India's deadliest terror incidents, prompting the lengthy legal proceedings now concluding.
Compensation ordered by the court includes Rs 10 lakh for families of the 56 deceased victims and Rs 1 lakh each for more than 200 injured survivors. The financial relief accompanies the sentencing verdict.
Separately, the National Investigation Agency continues investigating the November 2025 Delhi Red Fort blast. The agency filed a supplementary charge sheet against suspects Zamir Ahmed Ahangar and Tufail Ahmed Bhat.
Harkat-Ul-Jihad-Al-Islami had previously claimed responsibility for the 2008 bombings. The high court's ruling provides judicial closure on a terror attack that devastated Ahmedabad nearly 18 years ago.
