- Research by Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and HAMER shows that consuming gutkha and pan masala is carcinogenic and significantly increases the risk of oral cancer.
- The government warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators to protect public health, citing that 35% of Indian adults consume tobacco, with 21% using smokeless forms, according to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey.
