Baltimore’s Guinness Open Gate Brewery Closing After Rising Costs
The company said rising costs and shifting demand made the Baltimore-area operation hard to sustain after serving more than 2 million visitors.
- On Thursday, Diageo North America, Inc. announced that the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe, Maryland, will close Nov. 1 after nearly 8 years of operations.
- Rising operating costs and shifts in consumer demand made the Baltimore operation "increasingly difficult to sustain," according to the company's statement.
- Since opening in 2018, the facility served more than 2 million visitors; it laid off more than 100 workers three years ago when manufacturing ended.
- County Executive Kathy Klausmeier said she is "disappointed" by the closure and the resulting "uncertainty" for employees, while Diageo will establish a $250,000 community fund.
- Following the Nov. 1 closure, the United States will have only one remaining Guinness brewery, located in Chicago, consolidating the brand's domestic operations.
