ECOWAS lifts all sanctions against Guinea
The West African regional bloc ECOWAS on Wednesday removed all outstanding sanctions imposed against Guinea following the 2021 coup, after last month's election of former junta leader Mamady Doumbouya.
The regional organisation had already reduced certain economic and financial sanctions in February 2024. Today, it highlights the success of the constitutional referendum and the presidential election won by Mamadi Doumbouya.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided to lift all the sanctions still in force against Guinea, thus giving effect to the formal end of the measures taken following the coup d'état of September 2021, following the holding of a constitutional referendum in September 2023 and a presidential election in December, two elections which the subregional institution considers to have been held in a generally calmed climate.
