Guinea-Bissau: Death of Activist Provokes Indignation of Civil Society

The remains of Vigário Luís Balanta, activist and president of the revolutionary movement Pó di Terra, were found on Tuesday 31 March at the gates of the capital, Bissau. A death that arouses indignation in civil society, which reacted strongly to what it calls "killing". The 35-year-old activist was constantly protesting against the leadership of the transition led by the junta to power.

On the early morning of March 31, 2026, the lifeless body of Vicar Luís Balanta was discovered in an isolated area of N的Dame Lero, some 30 kilometres from Bissau. Secretary-General of the Revolutionary Civic Movement "Pó di Terra", this 35-year-old man concerned him with the stigmata of a violence whose ordinance leaves little doubt as to its criminal nature.
