Guimet museum in Paris sued for dropping Tibet from gallery name
Pro-Tibetan groups are suing the Musée Guimet in Paris, the French capital's best known Asian art museum, over its decision to rename its Nepal-Tibet room as "Himalayan world". Lawyers for the plaintiffs accuse the museum of "align(ing) itself with Chinese lobbying efforts".
Four solidarity associations with Tibet filed an appeal Wednesday, July 2nd before the administrative court to order the Guimet Museum to rewrite its cartels on works originating in this Himalayan region. They describe an institution that is increasingly porous with Chinese influence.
Four associations represented by William Bourdon's law firm bring an overpowering action against the public institution, which they accuse of being under the influence of China.
After several months of controversy, an appeal was filed against the museum, accused of political compromise in favour of China. For its part, the institution brandishes the map of its scientific freedom. A rare case, to be followed at the administrative court of Paris.
