Guillermo Del Toro Finally Reveals What Killed His BioShock Movie
Del Toro said a few contentious calls derailed the adaptation and left him unwilling to make another video game film.
- Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro confirmed he was in talks to adapt the 2007 game BioShock, but the project was scrapped after a "disastrous" phone call. He revealed the abandonment during a recent interview with IGN.
- Rumors of his involvement had circulated for years before he addressed them, describing the discussions as "contentious." Del Toro noted that video game and movie storytelling structures differ significantly, complicating the adaptation process.
- Despite his admiration for the game, del Toro admitted the experience soured him on future adaptations. When asked if he would attempt another video game film, he responded bluntly, "Fuck no."
- Director Gore Verbinski previously attempted to bring the title to the screen but the project failed to materialize. Currently, a separate iteration is in active development at Netflix with no additional details available.
- This follows del Toro's previous failed experiences with the survival horror game Insane, cancelled in 2012 after two years of development, and the Silent Hills project. His track record explains his current reluctance to pursue game adaptations.
