- The evacuation followed an eruption that began Wednesday night, prompting an orange alert and suspension of classes at 39 schools near the 3,763‑meter volcano.
- Residents from at least five communities across Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez provinces were moved to shelters after videos showed children boarding buses amid ash and rain.
- The Volcanology Institute reported ash plumes reaching 5,000 meters and warned of pyroclastic flows, while the government closed the road linking southern Guatemala to Antigua, a UNESCO site.
- Given Fuego’s history of deadly eruptions, including one in 2018 that killed 215 people, authorities expect ongoing activity and possible further evacuations in the coming hours.
