Giants Trade Gold Glove Catcher Patrick Bailey to Cleveland for Pitching Prospect, Draft Pick
Cleveland adds elite defense behind the plate as Bailey is batting .146 this season and Naylor heads to Triple-A Columbus.
On Saturday, the Cleveland Guardians acquired two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants, receiving the 29th pick in the 2026 amateur draft and left-handed prospect Matt Wilkinson in return.
Bailey, a premier defensive catcher who won Gold Gloves in 2024 and 2025, struggled offensively this season with a.146 batting average and.396 OPS, prompting the Giants to seek a deal as Daniel Susac returns from injury.
The Guardians optioned Bo Naylor to Triple-A Columbus to make room for Bailey, who leads the majors with 69 catcher framing runs since 2023 and currently leads the AL Central with a 21-19 record.
San Francisco acquired Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, a 23-year-old Canadian left-hander who struck out 36 batters in 28.1 innings at Double-A Akron this season with a 1.59 ERA.
The Giants, tied for the worst record in the National League and averaging just 3.16 runs per game, strengthened their draft position by acquiring the $3.27 million slot for the 29th pick, raising their bonus pool to $17.35 million.
