Growing B.C. wildfire closes Highway 1, more evacuation alerts issued
Nearly 100 firefighters and 12 helicopters are battling the out-of-control blaze as smoke limits aerial suppression and air-quality warnings continue.
The out-of-control Brunswick Creek wildfire near Boston Bar has grown to 12.3 square kilometres since its discovery on July 2, burning in the Fraser Canyon and suspected to be human-caused.
High winds reaching 50 kilometres an hour drove the fire's significant growth over the weekend, while elevated gusts of up to 40 kilometres per hour are expected to persist through Wednesday.
The BC Wildfire Service has deployed 96 firefighters, 12 helicopters, and nine pieces of heavy equipment to the complex, forcing evacuations of 146 properties in North Bend and Fishblue Lake areas.
Thick smoke has triggered air-quality warnings across the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon, as Environment Canada advises residents to limit outdoor activity while poor visibility restricts helicopter operations.
Residents expressed fears of community damage citing the fifth anniversary of the Lytton wildfire, though forecasts show no meaningful precipitation to aid suppression efforts despite cooler temperatures expected by week's end.
