UK grocery inflation eases in boost to shoppers

Shoppers made 497 million supermarket trips over four weeks as beer, water and frozen treats drove seasonal spending, Worldpanel by Numerator said.

  • Grocery inflation eased to 2.6% over the four weeks to July 12, marking the lowest rate since December 2024, according to figures from Worldpanel by Numerator.
  • Despite slowing inflation, the average household spent £5,530 on groceries over the past 12 months to July, up £156 from the same period last year, Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said.
  • Shoppers made 497 million supermarket trips over the four weeks, the highest since March 2020. World Cup matches and heatwaves drove a 21% surge in beer spending and 25% increase in burger sales.
  • During Wimbledon, shoppers spent £77 million on strawberries and £21 million on cream. Lidl achieved the largest market share gain at 8.6%, while Sainsbury moved to 15.2% and Tesco held 27.9%.
  • England's tournament performance shaped shopping habits alongside summer weather, McKevitt noted. "Sport and sunshine combined to shape shopping habits this month, and England," he added, highlighting the impact on drinks purchases.
