Man Accused of Killing Journalist Takes Own Life in Kogi
LOKOJA, KOGI STATE, NIGERIA, JUL 25 – The suspect, a Nigerian Correctional Service officer, allegedly killed and dismembered the photojournalist before committing suicide two days later, police said.
- On Tuesday, July 22, photojournalist Ayobami Aiyepeku was allegedly murdered by Jacob Adebayo Pelumi in an office near Lokoja's Government House area.
- Pelumi allegedly invited Aiyepeku to the poultry farm located in their shared compound, struck him multiple times on the head with an iron object, then dismembered the body and tried to transport the parts in a Hilux van.
- Police launched a manhunt for Pelumi after a tip-off, and on Thursday a hotel steward found Pelumi's body around 1 p.m. in a Lokoja hotel room, believed to be a suicide.
- Abdullahi Adamu, chairman of Lokoja Local Government, directed that Abidan 115 Hotel be shut down promptly to safeguard evidence, as the victim’s family called for justice and officials committed to recovering Aiyepeku’s body.
- Aiyepeku's murder sparked widespread outrage and calls for swift justice across social media, with many emphasizing the tragic loss to the creative community and urging calm as investigations continue.
