Greggs announces trial of new express checkouts for first time to combat queues
The bakery chain is testing a self-checkout format to speed up service, with customer reactions at the first unit to be analyzed before wider rollout.
Greggs launched its first 'Greggs Express' self-service trial at a Motor Fuel Group petrol forecourt at Glasgow Airport, replacing traditional counters with self-checkout kiosks for faster transactions.
Property director Tony Rowson said the concept aims to 'enhance our customer experience, focusing on convenience and speed' while evaluating how the format supports future growth plans alongside Greggs' broader estate.
Greggs also recently introduced 'Bitesize Greggs' for limited-space locations with three currently open, while running a separate trial across six stores to combat 'higher levels of anti-social behaviour' by locking items behind counters.
Jamie Constable, head of operations at MFG, called the self-service format 'perfectly suited to the fast-paced, on-the-go needs of our customers,' as Greggs analyzes public reaction before wider rollout.
Following the Glasgow Airport pilot, Greggs plans to roll out additional self-service units at various British travel hubs throughout the year, contingent on customer behavior analysis determining concept viability.
