Man Arrested in Sussex and Charged with Assisting Foreign Intelligence Service
Police say the charge follows an investigation into alleged assistance to Iran targeting a UK-based journalist, with no wider threat to the public believed.
- On Friday, Greek national Ioannis Aidinidis, 46, was charged under the National Security Act for assisting a foreign intelligence service. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court later today.
- Detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing London, supported by CTP South East, arrested Aidinidis in West Sussex on May 16. Westminster Magistrates Court granted warrants for his continued detention until charges were authorized.
- Allegations involve Aidinidis assisting Iranian intelligence services in targeting a UK-based journalist working for Iran International. Police state the country to which allegations relate is believed to be Iran.
- Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTP London, acknowledged the situation may cause concern for those in Persian-language media. Police maintain there is no believed wider threat to the public in relation to this matter.
