Greece to buy €3.5 billion air defence system from Israel: Report
The package adds drones and a Greek-built command hub to link Israeli radars and missiles into a unified shield, officials said.
- On Thursday, Greece's Government Council for National Security is expected to approve a $3.42 billion Israeli-made air and missile defense package, clearing the way for implementation of the Achilles' Shield program.
- Designed as a unified, network-centric defense ecosystem, the Shield will connect new Israeli systems with Greek F-16 Viper fighters, Belharra-class FDI frigates, incoming F-35 stealth aircraft, and existing Patriot missile batteries for integrated threat response.
- ELTA's M-2084 Multi-Mission Radars will track 1,200 airborne targets at distances up to 475 kilometers, while the Barak backbone, David's Sling, and SPYDER systems replace aging Cold War-era Hawk and Soviet-designed S-300 batteries.
- Greece will also acquire Brazilian-made C-390 Millennium transport aircraft, British-built VICTA mini-submarines, an Israeli Heron drone system, and upgrades to four MEKO-200 frigates, expanding transport, intelligence, and naval capabilities.
- Israeli officials will travel to Athens to finalize contracts prepared by the General Directorate for Defense Armaments and Investments, formalizing the framework required for the Shield to become operational.

The Greek government has approved the purchase of the Israeli Achilles Shield air defense system for 2.8 billion euros, a Greek defense ministry spokesman, who did not want to be named, confirmed to AFP on Thursday.
