Greece has acquired a collection of Nazi photographs from a collector in Evergem. An agreement had already been reached between the government and the man. Now the photos have actually been transferred. It is unclear whether a financial deal was also reached. The images depict executions from 1944 in an Athens suburb, when 200 people were killed. The collector had put some of the photos up for sale, which caused a huge uproar.
These photos would show “the last moments” of 200 Greek communists executed by the Nazis in the Athenian district of Kaisariani on May 1, 1944.
The ministry now has 262 photographs, 16 documents and 4 old banknotes, which the Belgian collector had put up for sale online two weeks ago.
“The transfer of ownership of the photographic collection, from which the photographs of the executed in Kaisariani came, has been completed,” Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said in a statement on Saturday morning.
