LNER Slashes Prices on a Million Train Tickets in Rail Sale with Savings of up to 50%
More than three million tickets are available at half price or more in a nationwide effort to reduce rail fares and boost travel demand, officials said.
- On January 6, the Department for Transport launched the Great British Rail Sale, offering more than three million discounted journeys with 50 per cent off or more for travel from January 13 to March 25, 2026.
- Following a government freeze on rail fares, Ministers said the discounts help families afford days out and support tourism-dependent areas such as the Lake District.
- Booking rules state most offers are advance-purchase tickets that must be booked at least seven days in advance and by 23.59 on 12 January 2026 via National Rail's Rail Sale webpage.
- Many customers face complications as Avanti West Coast uses the Settle–Carlisle line while the west coast mainline is blocked until January 15, and many cheap tickets are already selling out.
- LNER noted that the one million discounted tickets remain small compared with around 350 million rail journeys, while the sale supports a national campaign to make rail travel more affordable and aids cost-of-living relief.
