Grass Installation Starts at MetLife Stadium Ahead of World Cup
On Thursday, May 7, workers began installing about 600 rolls of grass grown in North Carolina at MetLife Stadium to meet FIFA requirements for the World Cup final.
MetLife typically hosts NFL teams on artificial turf, so stadium modifications were required to meet FIFA standards. The field was expanded by removing 1,740 seats to accommodate the required 75-by-115 yard pitch dimensions.
The new pitch sits on 18 inches of sand with specialized ventilation and irrigation systems. FIFA Senior Pitch Manager David Graham reported crews worked through the night, noting "it's going to plan at the moment" despite a slight weather delay.
New Jersey taxpayers funded at least $307 million in World Cup hosting costs, while the venue was rebranded as 'New York New Jersey Stadium' for the tournament. The authority also invested $13,045,463 in field construction and maintenance equipment.
MetLife is one of 16 venues hosting the expanded 48-nation, 104-game World Cup tournament beginning June 12 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. FIFA is deploying two grass types to accommodate different climate conditions at these international match sites.
