The Recording Academy Reconsidering Asian Pop Category After BTS Pulls Out of Grammys
Harvey Mason Jr. said the Academy is in active talks after BTS refused to submit music, citing a language rule that could exclude English-language tracks.
On Friday, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason revealed the Academy is discussing potential changes to the "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" category following BTS's decision to boycott the Grammys.
All seven BTS members posted identical statements criticizing the category's language requirement, arguing that music should not be judged by "region or language."
The group's recent number one Song, "Swim," was ineligible for the category because Its English lyrics failed to meet the requirement of "meaningful use" of an Asian language.
Mason explained that the Academy spent the past two weeks in "numerous conversations" with stakeholders who felt the category failed to represent their work as they hoped.
Stressing that the Academy is committed to ensuring musicians "feel truly seen and heard," Mason added that the Board has shown it can "act decisively" when necessary.
