Staines Triple Murder Case: SC Gives Ultimatum to Odisha on Dara Singh’s Remission Plea
The bench warned it may decide the plea itself if Odisha’s Sentence Review Board keeps delaying action on the life convict’s request.
- On Wednesday, the Supreme Court gave the Odisha government a final opportunity to decide on the premature release of Bajrang Dal member Dara Singh, serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons.
- Following a year-long manhunt, Singh was arrested in 2000 and received a death sentence in 2003, which the Orissa High Court commuted to life imprisonment in 2005; the Supreme Court confirmed this conviction in 2011.
- In his remission plea, Singh argued he has served 26 years, exceeding the 25-year threshold required by the Odisha Remission Rules, and claimed the crime occurred in a "fit of youthful rage" while "protecting the nation."
- A Bench headed by Justice Manoj Misra cautioned that procrastination would lead to the court taking over the decision, as authorities require documents from Uttar Pradesh to conclude the review before the September 2 deadline.
- Another person convicted in the case, Mahendra Hembram, was released from an Odisha jail in April 2025 on the grounds of "good behaviour," establishing precedent for Singh's ongoing remission review.
