North Dakota Man Drowns in Cass Lake on Saturday
CASS COUNTY, MINNESOTA, AUG 10 – The 41-year-old man likely drowned after exiting to fix a motor without a life vest as the boat drifted in high winds, officials said.
- A 41-year-old man from Grafton drowned after exiting a pontoon on Cass Lake on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
- He exited the pontoon to fix a boat motor but did not resurface as the boat drifted in high winds, prompting a 911 call at 5:50 p.m.
- A variety of responders supported the search effort, including local fire and ambulance services from Cass Lake, tribal police, conservation officers from Leech Lake and Minnesota DNR, personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, and members of the Lakes Area Dive Team.
- The man was found without a life vest in the water around 7:51 p.m. and recovered; an autopsy is scheduled and his identity is withheld pending family notification.
- The Cass County Sheriff's Office stated the incident remains under investigation to determine further details surrounding the drowning.
