India Eases SEZ Rules to Boost Semiconductor, Electronics Manufacturing Drive
- On June 3, 2025, the Government of India introduced revisions to the 2006 SEZ Rules to simplify regulatory requirements and support the growth of the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing industries.
- These reforms address the sector's substantial investment needs and extended development timelines by lowering the minimum contiguous land requirement from 50 to 10 hectares and easing restrictions on encumbrance-free land.
- Additional changes allow goods supplied free of cost to count towards Net Foreign Exchange calculations and permit SEZ units to sell domestically after paying duties, enhancing operational flexibility.
- The Board of Approval sanctioned SEZ proposals from Micron Semiconductor in Sanand, Gujarat and Aequs Group in Dharwad, Karnataka .
- These amendments aim to boost India’s semiconductor ecosystem, attract foreign investment, create skilled jobs, and position India as a competitive global semiconductor manufacturing hub.
