Governor Braun suspends gas sales tax and gas excise tax for 30 days
Gov. Mike Braun’s latest move will save Hoosiers nearly 60 cents per gallon this month as fuel prices rise.
- On Wednesday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun extended the gasoline usage tax suspension for 30 days and added a new 30-day suspension of the gasoline excise tax.
- Rising prices prompted the extension, building on an initial 30-day holiday from early April, with Indiana gas averaging $4.76 per gallon, roughly 22 cents above the national average.
- Combined, the suspensions of the $0.36 excise tax and $0.23 usage tax will save Hoosiers nearly 60 cents per gallon, amounting to a 12.4% discount on average gasoline prices.
- Rep. Greg Porter supported the relief, while State Senator Shelly Yoder criticized it as a "30-day patch" failing to address long-term pressures.
- Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, warned that while relief may keep prices slightly lower, uncertainty persists due to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
