Kentucky Gov. Beshear Extends Gas Tax Reduction for 33 Cities, Counties
The extension keeps the 10-cent reduction in place for 33 communities, while state officials estimate it cuts Road Fund revenue by $26.8 million a month.
Gov. Andy Beshear announced on Tuesday that a 10-cent gas tax reduction will continue through June 30 for 33 Kentucky cities and counties, including Louisville, after local officials requested extensions.
Beshear initiated the relief in May to counter rising fuel costs from the war in Iran and to halt a scheduled gas tax increase from 26.4 cents to 27 cents per gallon.
An estimated $26.8 million monthly loss to the Road Fund led Committee Chairman Ken Upchurch to call the action "terrible public policy," with lawmakers projecting a nearly 17% decline in road aid.
Starting Thursday, June 11, residents in areas that did not request extensions will see gasoline and diesel prices increase by 10 cents per gallon.
Officials warn that individual savings of about $4 monthly may not justify potential road maintenance costs, as debate continues over using the Budget Reserve Trust Fund to replace lost revenue.
