Governor activates State Emergency Center after confirmed tornadoes hit southwest Michigan
Governor Whitmer activated the emergency center to coordinate response after tornadoes caused injuries and widespread damage across Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties.
- On Friday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center around 6 p.m. to coordinate an all-hands response to severe weather in southwest Michigan.
- The storm produced multiple tornadoes across Three Rivers, Edwardsburg, Juno Lake and Union City, moving northeast at 40 mph with winds up to 60 mph.
- SEOC is operating at Level 3 monitoring, with MSP/EMHSD personnel and district coordinators deployed to assist local emergency operation centers and private-sector partners.
- Residents described the scene, with Kelly Andrews saying 'My husband and I just took off and came home. I'm just glad that my kids are okay and my neighbors are okay. It's just unbelievable.' after injuries in Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties.
- United Way of Southwest Michigan activated the Southwest Michigan Cares Fund and advised residents to call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS or dial 211 for help.
