Zimbabwe: Zim Suspends Poultry Imports From Brazil Following Bird Flu Outbreak
- On May 15, 2025, Zimbabwe announced an immediate ban on the importation of poultry and related products from Brazil after the Brazilian authorities confirmed a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
- The suspension followed Brazil’s May 16 confirmation of the first bird flu case on a commercial farm, leading to a 28-day observation period declared on May 22 after disinfecting the affected farm.
- The virus killed about 15,000 birds and forced the destruction of 1.7 million eggs, prompting trading partners such as China and the EU to halt chicken imports from Brazil.
- Zimbabwe’s Ministry cited the outbreak’s risk to public health and the economy, urging full compliance with the import suspension and recommending enhanced biosecurity among local poultry producers.
- The Ministry will monitor Brazil’s situation and may adjust the suspension in due course, stressing the importance of controlling the outbreak to protect local industry and health.
