USDOJ Files 24 Denaturalization Cases that Includes One Case in New Mexico
Federal prosecutors say a fingerprint match linked two identities and exposed alleged concealment of prior immigration history in the citizenship case.
- Federal prosecutors sued Arkansas resident Zia Murad Bhatti in U.S. District Court on Friday, alleging he obtained citizenship fraudulently by concealing his identity and a prior 1994 deportation order when naturalized on Aug. 25, 2008.
- Raza Moorad, Bhatti's former identity, had failed citizenship attempts and faced deportation in 1994 before resurfacing under the new name in July 1996 after marrying a U.S. citizen. A 2019 fingerprint match by Homeland Security Investigation's Forensic Laboratory exposed the dual identity.
- This case is part of a record-breaking push: the Justice Department filed 25 denaturalization cases between July 20 and Aug. 3, marking the "largest denaturalization effort ever," according to the department. Other defendants include Tatiana Power and Dwyane Robinson.
- Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate said the department refuses to give "a free pass to criminals who cheated their way into American citizenship." Officials cite identity fraud as the primary basis for the lawsuits, per nonpartisan research organization TRAC.
- While Sen. Eric Schmitt introduced the Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation Act to expand denaturalization, Rep. Grace Meng criticized the push, saying the administration's targeting of naturalized citizens "is a reckless weaponization of the Department of Justice.
